Match report West lothian 3 v penicuik 2, at gyle public park, 25/05/13

After losing the toss we fielded first on what was a glorious day for cricket. Unfortunately for us the two openers put on a healthy partnership which was not broken until shortly after drinks. The rest of the west lothian innings carried on in much the same vein with chances hard to come by (but largely being missed when they did occasionally come), as they posted a total of 225-4 from their 40 overs. Their skipper Norris smashed an unbeaten ~80.

Highlights in our bowling attack came courtesy of Ali Wilson who earned his 8 overs taking one scalp, and generally bowled very well, and young mikey brown who claimed two wickets and looks a promising prospect. Overall though it was a disappointing performance, especially in the field where we looked disinterested and disjointed at times (as an inexperienced captain i can probably take some blame on this front)

Our reply got off to a flying start with their opening bowler offering us some tennis shots early on which i was more than happy to tuck away. However wickets soon began to fall and it quickly became a struggle to see how we would reach the target. Run rate was good but regular loss of wickets was proving an Achilles heel as is so often the case. In the end we posted a total of 117 all out, with George liddle top scoring with 38, myself with 30 mainly comprising boundaries but no one else really getting into their stride.

Overall I had a great feeling of disappointment from the day's proceedings as I felt they were there for the taking, however not taking any credit away from them, their skipper Norris not only top scoring with the bat but also claiming four scalps with the ball - perhaps the difference, not to mention we did battle with just ten men. With that said, I felt our overall attitude and performance was poor and we must look to address this in the coming weeks.

West lothian won by 108 runs.
