Hawick and Wilton v Stuart & Stuart Penicuik Cricket Club Sunday Development XI on Sun 13 May 2012 at 1330
Stuart & Stuart Penicuik Cricket Club Lost by 37 runs

Match report This report was taken from Hawick's website:

Hawick played host to a strong Penicuik Border Sunday XI at Buccleugh Park on a cold and blustery mid-May day.

Captain N Storey won the toss and elected to bat on a reasonable track. This brought the opening pair of Andrew Parr and Gary `Joel` Alexander to the crease, Parr stayed in briefly and left with out troubling the scorers, while at the other end Alexander was looking strong and confident. Hawick`s middle order had a slight wobble, but was sured up by a a good 18 by P Solley and the innings was given a real lift with an excellent, solid display by the young Euan Hair, scoring an entertaining quick fire 51 including six sixes! Gary Alexander was then joined by his son Ronan, who rattled off a very good unbeaten 21. Alexander `senior` eventually fell for 74 though his contribution surely putting the Hawick men in a good position as Hawick made a competitive 195, batting the full 40 overs.

With the weather deterioting the Penicuik batters came out to the middle (a much needed brew postponed till after the game). Hawick`s opening attack of Storey and Bryant failed to get an early breakthrough, the Penicuik pair of Juson and Liddle played well in increasingly difficult condtions. P Solley entered the attack and soon picked up the important wicket of Liddle for 17, Solley then picked up another quick pair of wickets both taken very well behind by L Nichol on his first game back behind the stumps this season. Penicuik were scoring steadily, with opener Juson leading the assult, this was untill S Hair bolwed a full delivery and giving J Boyle a straight forward catch at mid-off. Juson fell for a well played 89. With the rain now falling steadily and the run rate drying up due to tight bowling and sharp fielding, R Charleson scoring a good 30 not out, this however was not enough to reach the impressive total set by Hawick.

This was a good win in tricky conditions by a largely young but skilled team.

Additional comment

Many thanks to Hawick for agreeing to play through tea in order to acheive a result. We could have taken it and we certainly would not have lost due to the weather. Well done to Martin in getting his first 50.
